While in Utah, my sister-in-law Jen told me that they had a 72 hour kit for their family and that they had them in back-packs; 1 pack per 2 people. I thought that was a great idea. I decided that we needed to have a 72 hour kit too. Maybe right now we can't do the whole food storage thing but at least we could handle a 72 hour kit, right?! After running the idea past my husband, I found that he was not as enthused as I was. I was pumped, I had researched what to put in it and how much you needed per person. I was already to go spend money! :) (I think that is why the excitement was not double-sided.) anyways, I went to Wal-Mart to return somethings and get some hairspray and lotion... well while I was there I got carried away and ended up shopping for our 72 hour kit. I was by myself and was not distracted by any children so it was great times for me. Chad was not surprised when I came home and wanted me to return everything. So, I am asking you all if you have a 72 hour kit. What is in it? How much is too much? if you don't mind sharing, how much did you spend on the whole thing?

JJ and I have good ones that we made when we weere first married---it was a RS activity and they are in a food storage tin. I can't remember how much they cost. About a year ago I just put some stuff in a diaper box, like a couple of boxes of crackers, baby wipes, bottled water. Just a couple things like that. I need to add to it and update it with diapers. For a while we tried to add things to it every month. LIke get one thing for it a month. One month we got a hatchet and agood pocket knife, I had a list after going to a RS activity here. I got motivated for a while. I need to get back on that. I think maybe if you do it more gradual, like maybe pick out 1/2 the things you got, the MOST essential and then return the rest and buy them back a little at a time. Oh I also have a list of things to grab last minute, since I didn't want to put clothes in there for everyone, that is one thing.
We don't have one but we are working to get one together. We will have to do it in small steps. I don't know how much you should expect to spend. I suppose it depends on how detailed it is. Our thought is that we can also use much of it for camping as well.
We have a Focus Group here in our Ward for it and they have a suggested item every month. They come with the item and tell us where the cheapest (but best quality) store to buy it is located. Sometimes they have a group discount if we buy so many. I know this doesn't really help, but I guess I'm trying to say that we buy either 1 big thing or a few mall things every month to stretch the budget.
http://beprepared.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_K7%20M520_A_name_E_Trekker%20II™%20Emergency%20Kit Hopefully that link works. If not, just search 72-hour kit on beprepared.com. It's $99.95 for a kit for two. Plus, we could keep them in the car (since we really didn't have a good storage space in NE) because they're "extreme temperature" sensitive.
I can't tell you what to put in it, but my aunt (who has 10 kids) had a good idea. They make up their kits and then every conference weekend (or maybe every other) they eat them and restock it. I thought that was good to help remember to keep it rotated. The most important thing is water, then maybe some granola bars, mini first aid kit- go onto providentliving.org. BEst of LUCk!
Hi Natalie,
We made our kit up. We thought all the things that we need and used information they provided at church. We put it in the basement in the play room for easy access.
We have had other kits before this but our needs have changed so we have updated them and put different items and snacks in them.
We just bought a first kit at Walmart last week for Dad to take out to Utah. They were on sale for alittle over 8 dollars. We actually bought 2 of them. One for Dad's truck. It was such a good buy. They had a big display of them. There were 2 different sizes. We put the smallest one back and got the larger one for just a few dollars more. We thought it was a very good buy.
